Self Check

In order to prevent the misreading of a bar code, a parity bit is added, in order to let the module of bars be odd or even, to each character, except in the EAN symbol and in the CODE-93 symbol.

Short Version

An 8-digit version of the JAN symbol. It is used smaller products that cannot display the Standard version of the code due to space limitations. The short version of the Jan code is only for domestic use in Japan.


Source Marking

The bar coding of a specific item at the point of the initial production of the item; often refers to the inclusion of the UPC symbol in the label artwork of the item to be distributed by the manufacturer.

Space

The white bar between two black bars is also refered to as space or white space.

Spot

A smudge or blemish made by dirt, stain, or other imperfection.

Standard Symbology for Physical Distribution

A bar code displayed on the concentrated packages like cardboard boxes, for the administration of physical distribution.

Standard Version

Refers to the standard, most common versions of a bar code symbol. The 13-digit version of JAN. symbol is the standard version.
