JAN

Japanese Article Number is the commom code for Japan. it is a 13-digit code consisting of the flag code ( 49 or 45), a 5-digit maker code, a 5-digit item code, and a 1-digit checkdigit. The JAN symbology follows EAN standards and is accepted all over the world (minus the US and Canada). In Japan, an 8-digit JAN type, called short version is also available for small products. It consists of 2-digit flag, 4-digit maker code, 1-digit item code and 1-digit checkdigit.

JAN Item Code File Service is a JAN-code database service provided by DCC (Distribution Code Center). By registering their item codes with the DCC, makers gain the following advantages:

Retailers can reduce time entering product information into the computer.
Makers can gather information, such as sales, from similar products.
